Find answers to common questions

Is it safe for LGBTQ+ couples to travel to Sri Lanka?

Yes, Sri Lanka is generally safe for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially in tourist areas. While there are colonial-era laws on the books, they are rarely enforced in private, consensual situations. The key is to exercise discretion in public spaces, which applies to all couples regardless of orientation. International hotels and tourist areas are welcoming and accustomed to diverse guests.

Can same-sex couples share hotel rooms?

Yes, absolutely. International chain hotels and reputable boutique properties have no issues with same-sex couples sharing rooms. We personally vet all our partner accommodations to ensure they are LGBTQ+-friendly. At Ceylon Trails, we book double rooms for couples as standard practice.

What should I do if I face discrimination?

Discrimination is rare in tourist areas, but if you experience any issues:

  • Contact our 24/7 support line immediately: +94 76 498 4033
  • For serious incidents, contact the Tourist Police (011-2421052) who are generally more helpful than regular police
  • Document any incidents with photos or videos if safe to do so
  • Your embassy can also provide assistance in serious situations

Do you recommend specific LGBTQ+-friendly hotels?

Yes! We have a curated list of verified LGBTQ+-friendly properties across Sri Lanka. These include international chains like Cinnamon, Shangri-La, and Marriott, as well as boutique properties known for their inclusive policies. All hotels in our packages are pre-vetted to ensure a welcoming experience for all couples.

Can we request a double bed instead of twin beds?

Absolutely. When booking through Ceylon Trails, we always request a double bed (king or queen) for couples unless you specify otherwise. This is standard practice for us, and our partner hotels are happy to accommodate this request.

Is public affection acceptable in Sri Lanka?

Public displays of affection (PDA) are generally frowned upon in Sri Lankan culture, regardless of sexual orientation. This includes holding hands, kissing, or hugging in public spaces. We recommend keeping affection private - save it for your hotel room or private spaces. This cultural norm applies to all couples, not just LGBTQ+ travelers.

How should we dress as LGBTQ+ travelers?

Dress codes in Sri Lanka are conservative, especially at religious sites:

  • Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples and religious sites
  • Beachwear is fine at beaches and pools, but cover up when leaving these areas
  • In cities and hotels, casual Western clothing is acceptable
  • There's no specific dress code for LGBTQ+ travelers - the same rules apply to everyone

Are there LGBTQ+ bars or nightlife in Sri Lanka?

Colombo has a small but growing LGBTQ+ scene. While there are no exclusively gay bars, several venues are known to be LGBTQ+-friendly, particularly upscale hotel bars and lounges. The scene is more underground compared to Western countries. We can provide current recommendations upon request - just ask your travel consultant or message us on WhatsApp.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different coasts:

  • December to March: Best for the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Bentota, Mirissa)
  • May to September: Best for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Passikudah)
  • Cultural Triangle: Good year-round, though avoid October-November heavy rains
  • Hill Country: Pleasant year-round, cooler temperatures

Do we need to hide our relationship when booking tours?

Not with Ceylon Trails! We are an LGBTQ+-owned and operated travel company. You can be completely open with us about your relationship. We treat all couples equally and specialize in creating romantic, inclusive experiences. Your privacy and comfort are our top priorities.

Can you arrange a same-sex honeymoon or wedding ceremony?

Yes! We specialize in LGBTQ+ honeymoons and can arrange romantic experiences including:

  • Private beach dinners with candlelight
  • Couples' spa treatments and wellness retreats
  • Symbolic commitment ceremonies (not legally binding)
  • Photography sessions at scenic locations
  • Honeymoon suites with special amenities

Note: Same-sex marriage is not legally recognized in Sri Lanka, but we can create beautiful symbolic ceremonies.

What documents do we need for travel?

Standard travel documents required:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
  • Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) - apply online before arrival
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings)
  • Travel insurance (recommended)

If you've changed your name or gender marker, ensure your passport matches your booking details or carry supporting documentation.
