Batticaloa is renowned as Sri Lanka's diving paradise with over a dozen dive sites in the Bay of Bengal. The crown jewel is the HMS Hermes — the world's first purpose-built aircraft carrier, sunk in 1942 during WWII. Lying at 44-53 metres, this wreck is considered one of the best technical dive sites globally.

Other notable dives include the SS British Sergeant, HMS Hollyhock, White Rock reef, and multiple boiler wrecks. Water temperature averages 27-30°C year-round with visibility up to 30 metres. Best diving season: Mid-February to October (optimal April-September).
